Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Develop novel AI methodologies for biomedical research.
  • Design foundation models and graph/geometric deep learning approaches.
  • Collaborate with AI scientists and biomedical researchers worldwide.
  • Publish research in top international journals and conferences.
  • Present findings at international scientific meetings.
  • Contribute to open-source software development.
  • Assist in teaching activities and supervise junior students.

The position provides sufficient research time to complete a doctoral degree under the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG).

Eligibility Criteria

For a PhD, applicants should have:

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Biology, Medicine, or a related discipline.
  • Strong academic performance.
  • Experience in machine learning, deep learning, data analysis, or AI model development.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Strong programming ability.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Motivation to work in interdisciplinary biomedical AI research.

Candidates from quantitative life science backgrounds with strong computational expertise are also encouraged to apply.

For a Postdoc, applicants should have:

  • MSc-degree or equivalent and a PhD (completed on the start date of employment) in computer science, mathematics, physics or a related field, or an applied/life science (e.g., engineering, biology, or medicine), with a focus on data analysis and/or machine learning (very good grades are generally required)
  • Strong interest in developing AI for real-world applications
  • Several years of experience in machine learning, AI, and data science with strong theoretical foundations; optimally but not required: knowledge in single cell or spatial biology and multi-omics integration (e.g., flow cytometry, FACS, CyTOF, MERFISH, spectroscopy, etc.)
  • Structured, self-managed and team-oriented working style with strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams as well as lead junior researchers, and strong commitment to your own scientific development
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English as well as excellent presentation skills of research results

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.
