Brief Overview of the position University: The University of SydneyFaculty: Faculty of Science – School of PhysicsDegree: PhD / Master of Philosophy (MPhil)Research Area: Photonics, Optical Communications, Integrated Photonics, RF Signal ProcessingScholarship Value: AUD $42,754 per yearStudy Location: Sydney, AustraliaApplication Deadline: 22 June 2026 About the Scholarship The University of Sydney is offering a fully funded postgraduate research scholarship for outstanding domestic and international students interested in advanced research in photonics and integrated optical technologies. The scholarship supports a PhD or MPhil student who will undertake research on “Convert and Compress: On-chip photonic processing for resilient RF systems” — an innovative project focused on developing next-generation photonic technologies for high-performance radio frequency (RF) signal processing. The project is funded through an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project in Photonics and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science, providing students with an opportunity to work in a globally recognized research environment. Research Project Overview Modern communication systems require faster, more efficient, and more resilient technologies to handle increasing data demands. This project aims to develop an integrated radio frequency (RF) photonic signal processor capable of converting and compressing signals across the full spectrum while operating within receiver amplitude and frequency limitations. The research will involve areas including: Integrated photonics Optical signal processing RF photonic systems Photonic integrated circuits Optical microcombs Advanced communication technologies The successful candidate will contribute to the development of future-generation photonic systems with applications in telecommunications, sensing, and high-speed signal processing. Scholarship Benefits The selected candidate will receive: AUD $42,754 per year stipend Funding support for: Up to 7 research periods for MPhil students Up to 12 research periods for PhD students Possible extension of up to 2 additional research periods This funding provides financial support to allow students to focus fully on their research throughout their postgraduate studies. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must: Have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled full-time in a: Master of Philosophy (MPhil), or PhD programwithin the School of Physics, Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney Hold one of the following qualifications in Physics or a related field: Bachelor Honours degree with First Class or Second Upper Honours (or equivalent)OR A relevant Master’s degree Be willing to conduct research in photonics, particularly in developing integrated RF photonic processors. Applicants without an unconditional admission offer may still apply; however, the scholarship cannot be formally awarded until admission requirements are fulfilled. Who Should Apply? This opportunity is ideal for candidates with backgrounds in: Physics Photonics Optical engineering Electrical engineering Telecommunications engineering Applied physics Quantum and optical technologies Applicants interested in careers in advanced communication technologies, semiconductor photonics, and optical computing are encouraged to apply. Why Choose the University of Sydney? The University of Sydney is one of Australia’s leading research universities, offering world-class facilities and strong international collaborations.
